Grofers' Cofounder to step away amid funding talks with Zomato

Grofers’ Cofounder Saurabh Kumar has decided to step away from his role at the online grocery delivery firm. Grofers’ CEO Albinder Dhindsa announced that though Kumar will no longer be involved in the day-to-day activities at the firm, he will continue to be a board member and a shareholder at the company.

Dhindsa wrote in a blog post, “Over the last 6 months, SK [Saurabh Kumar] had been yearning to invest in his own personal evolution – to grow beyond a growth driver to become a designer, enabler and coach. And diving deeper has convinced him that this is another area he can have a huge impact on, if he can build on it from scratch.”

Kumar, in a farewell email to employees at Grofers, stated “I haven't known a life outside Grofers for the last 8 years. Most of my learning and growing up has happened here. In my mistakes, I have never felt alone.”

He further added, “I have been reflecting on my life and personal ambitions for some time. And my decision to step way is the outcome of that. I want to wander again.”

As Kumar hints towards another entrepreneurial venture, his exit from Grofers comes after 8 years since he co-founded Grofers in 2013 with Dhindsa.

Coincidentally, the exit comes at a time when Grofers has reportedly been in talks with Zomato to raise around $100 Mn to further bolster its position in the online grocery segment. The segment has seen increased competition and a spike in demand on the back of the pandemic. Rival BigBasket, which is the biggest online grocery delivery startup in the Indian market at the moment, was also acquired by the Tata Group last month.
