LinkedIn India head Akshay Kothari quits

Akshay Kothari, head of LinkedIn India and VP of international product, has quit after five years of working with the world’s largest professional networking site.

As per a TOI report, Kothari’s LinkedIn profile indicates that he left the company last month. It also indicates he has moved back to San Francisco.

LinkedIn confirmed his exit. In an emailed statement, the company stated,

"We are very grateful for Akshay’s leadership and contributions at LinkedIn for the past 5.5 years. He joined LinkedIn in 2013 after Pulse, a company he co-founded was acquired by LinkedIn. Since then, he played key roles across the company, most recently leading the growth of our business in India and international product efforts, with products like LinkedIn Lite. We wish him well in his next endeavor as he returns to his entrepreneurial roots. In India, while we finalize the appointment of a new country manager, Olivier Legrand, Managing Director of APAC will lean in and work closely with our local leadership team to operate as business as usual."

The statement indicates Kothari will be starting a new venture. Incidentally, Akshay had been recently promoted to the new position of Head, International Product, LinkedIn in May this year. The expansion of his role this year came two years after Kothari was promoted as the country manager for LinkedIn’s India market in January 2016.

Under Kothari, LinkedIn India grew its user base rapidly. When Kothari took over as the India head three years ago, LinkedIn had about 37 million members. The number is now over 50 million, LinkedIn's second biggest country. US continues to be the biggest, with 150 million users. China is third at 40 million.
