Vistara gets former SpiceJet Chief Operating Officer under its wings. Sanjiv Kapoor will join TATA SIA Airlines-run full service Vistara as its new Chief of Strategy and Commercial Officer. In his capacity at Vistara, "Sanjiv will be responsible for managing a wide portfolio of Vistara's commercial and planning functions, including strategy development, network planning, pricing and revenue management, sales & distribution, product development, branding, marketing and customer experience," the airline said in a release.

Sanjiv is set to succeed the Chief Commercial Officer Giam Ming Toh who will return to Singapore Airlines on completion of his deputation with the Airline. He is joining at a time when the Airline is struggling to fill its flights and it has already cut down business and premium economy seats in lieu of competition from other low cost airlines – IndiGo and SpiceJet.

At SpiceJet which was still owned by business tycoon Kalanithi Maran, Kapoor is the man who turned things around for the airline. He started aggressive pricing, discounts and offers which made its rivals to follow suit.

“I am very pleased and excited to join an airline that has the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines as its parents—you simply cannot beat the pedigree. Vistara has already earned an enviable reputation in terms of customer experience, service and operational excellence, and is well positioned to deliver on the proud legacy of the father of Indian aviation, JRD Tata,” Kapoor said to an Indian publication.

Phee Teik Yeoh, chief executive officer, Vistara, said the airline is entering into a new phase of growth and Kapoor’s industry knowledge backed by rich Indian and global experience will be valuable in propelling Vistara’s growth.

Kapoor has over 19 years of experience in the airline industry, having worked with airlines in Asia, Europe, and the US in leadership and advisory positions. A graduate from Dartmouth College, US, and with a MBA from Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Kapoor joined SpiceJet in 2013.

TATA SIA Airlines is a joint venture between Tata Sons Ltd and Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIA) with Tata Sons holding the majority stake of 51% in the company and SIA holding the remaining 49%.
