The state of Kerala has announced the drafting of industrial skilling policy to create new jobs, and retain and upskill youthful talent. In a state function, Kerala’s industries minister P. Rajeeve unveiled the policy, the focus being on upgrading the skills of Kerala youth to make them future-ready.

“We will play to our strengths and see wherever we can utilise our production capabilities to promote manufacturing in Kerala. The aim will be to generate employment in the State,” Rajeeve said, as reported by Hindu.

Kerala’s new industrial policy will leverage the inherent strengths of the State and focus on investing in the sunrise sectors. The policy draft will be made available to all stakeholders in 10 days for feedback and input.

Post the debate, the new policy is planned to be released in January 2023 and will be effective from April 2023.

The key pillars of the new industrial policy include fostering entrepreneurship, enabling infrastructure, being ready for the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and upgrading the skillsets of youth for futuristic jobs. The policy also emphasises generating more jobs, bringing balanced regional development, skill upgradation and sustainable investments.

The policy’s priority sectors include artificial intelligence, space, research and development, Ayurveda, biotechnology, engineering, designing, food technology, electronic system design and manufacturing, electric vehicles and Graphene.

As per various media sources, several incentives have been included in the draft policy for example investment subsidy on fixed capital, SGST reimbursement and apprenticeship incentives for the manufacturing sector.

Principal Secretary Industries A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, Principal Secretary Industries Suman Billa, KSIDC Managing Director and Director of Industries S. Harikishore, and Kinfra managing director Santhosh Koshy were also present.
