India has the strength to handle volatility, says Sonjoy Chatterjee

Sonjoy Chatterjee, Chairman, Goldman Sachs, India believes that India has the strength to handle volatility. In an interview to ET, Chatterjee pointed towards the $ 16 billion (approx) investment that the country has seen since January. He also said that when compared to countries in South East Asia, the outflows in India have been less. ET quoted Chatterjee as saying, “Unlike countries in South East Asia, which have seen almost all their inflows leave, India has barely seen $3 billion of outflow and that too is predominantly over the past two weeks. I think this is something to take comfort in.” In the interview, Chatterjee accepted that there is volatility; however, he said that he thinks India is a much stronger place today as compared to 1990s when the country wasn’t equipped to take the fiscal and monetary steps it is taking today.
