How should leaders lead? Everyone seems to have a theory, but none of them really challenge the basic assumption of leadership: that leaders need positional authority to lead. While the old school of thought says leaders should be authoritarian and know all the answers, the new school says that they should be collaborative and quick to embrace change. It all revolves around the not-so-crazy idea that the most influential leaders are the ones who can get people to follow them—without positional authority. It’s not as simple as flicking a switch, of course.
Before chasing influential authority, leaders must first build a culture of trust and learn to sow ownership among their team members.
