In an exclusive interaction with People Matters, Ms. Suchismita Burman, CHRO, ITC Infotech shares her views about the hiring outlook for the IT sector in 2020.

What does the outlook for the IT sector in India look like for 2020?

Economic growth should address the problem of unemployment of the skilled youth. The growth challenges in other countries continue to present an opportunity for India. IT-enabled value-added services, data analytics, automation, animation, digital media, and content development, bioinformatics, blockchain are areas that will get attention in 2020.

“While availability of qualified human capital is an advantage for India, winning in a competitive global market would require dedicated effort by India Inc.”

What are some of the new employment/hiring trends that will dominate this sector in 2020?

Today’s world is about digital interactions to build a human connection and to create an individualized experience around behaviors, preferences and patterns of individuals. This growing class of AI-powered solutions will gain dominance in 2020. As a result, roles in Data Science, AI architects, Dev Ops Engineers, Cloud Architects, Java Full stack Architects will be in demand. The challenge is not only finding individuals with the skills who can connect the dots to create business impact.

“Finding true data scientists continues to be a challenge.”

What are some of the things IT companies should look out for when hiring in 2020?

(a) An increasing importance of candidate engagement and candidate experience will be key to improve joining ratios and sustain the candidate mindshare in a volatile talent-hiring landscape.

(b) Retention prone hiring will be key and it will be a challenge to work through: switching interview techniques to enable hiring managers to better assess candidates’ potential loyalty will become a differentiator.

(c) Using talent insights to devise focused hiring strategies and implementation plans will be key to sustain the cost of hiring /return of technology investments.

What are some of the hot jobs to look out for in IT in 2020? Learning on the job will be a hot topic in 2020. What are some of the learning programs you have in place to facilitate this as well as help bridge the supply-demand gap in the industry?

Our learning focus will continue to be enabled through a blended approach. The key will be to ensure that people apply the learnings and that can happen based on proactive interactions/business understanding of the emerging trends and how to seed that learning in the way people work on assignments.

“The challenge is always applicability of the learning in projects to showcase experience and that’s where our focus will be.”

What do you think will be the IT industry’s biggest challenges in the year 2020?

Data governance, privacy and security issues will continue to be important and that has a correlation to public trust issues and how global business will be conducted and the flow of data. While digital transformation is the “way to go”, transforming from legacy to digital is not easy. Working through the economic ROI, predictability and how to prioritize the shifts will continue to be discussion points. Also, talent predictability and productivity linked to talent engagement will be key.
