An autonomous institute under the University of Mumbai, it is a research centre for PhD programme in management of University of Mumbai and SNDT Women’s University. The school, established by Padmabhushan Late Shri K. J. Somaiya, an entrepreneur, philanthropist and a visionary, is located in Vidyavihar, Mumbai, over 55 acres.

Rooted in Gandhian values, the institute ensures that its curriculum builds a student into an ethical corporate citizen. There is a special focus on business ethics and corporate governance and business leaders from the industry are routinely invited to talk on these subjects. There are co-curricular activities to enable students to work with the community. For example, the Social Cell is working on a project of providing low-cost water filter to slums and is also helping the Warli tribe to sell their artifacts. The institute ensures that the student is sensitive to the needs of the others, especially the downtrodden.

Talking about some of the new initiatives that the institute has undertaken recently, Prof.(Dr.) Satish Ailawadi, who is the current director of KJSIMSR, said, “We train community leaders such as Mumbai police on areas like stress management and crisis management, Navy officers in the fundamentals of management, especially logistics management. We train corporate professionals through Management Development Programmes in different functional areas such as marketing, operations etc. And short-term, industry-oriented programmes such as Advance Supply Chain Management, Creating New Ventures, Financial Analytics etc.” The institute does have tie-ups with corporates like BASF, Reliance Industries Limited, CRISIL, NSE and Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission among its clients.

The institute has collaborative arrangements with International business schools like Ingolstadt Technical University, Germany and IMC KREMS, Austria.

Their mission is to continuously innovate and use best practices of governance by maintaining transparency in all processes. The institute envisions becoming a world-class business school by creating and developing value-based education, intellectual capital and social responsibility.

The institute maintains a healthy faculty ratio of 1:15, with more than half of the faculty having an industry-rich experience. Faculty members are encouraged to do more scholarly as well as applied research in their functional areas such as HR, Operations, Marketing etc. And they publish in top-notch national and international journals. It has 79 full-time faculty members & 10 Adjunct faculty, out of which 35-40 members are deeply involved in research. About 35 per cent of them have a doctoral degree. The institute is provides research grants of Rs 1 lakh per annum per faculty member for presenting their paper in reputed research conferences. For continuous faculty development institute encourages and facilitates skill development workshop for its faculty in India and abroad.
