As Sameer Batra, CEO of Bharti Airtel's broadband services leaves the company after 14 years, Vir Indernath, currently the Chief of retail business at Airtel, is expected to take over.

Reminiscing his days at Airtel Batra wrote, "After 14 gratifying years at Bharti Airtel where I had the opportunity to work with a bunch of bright colleagues (who are now friends for life ) and inspiring leaders, to my own development as a leader and giving back to the teams I worked with ... I am moving to Amazon - a company that I have long admired as a customer and a business partner."

As he now embarks on a new journey at Amazon, he mentioned he will remain Airtel at heart. "I will always be 'I am Airtel'," he wrote.

He spent over 14 years in various roles at Airtel. Prior to broadband services, he led Airtel's content service, Wynk, for almost two years. Before Airtel, he also worked at BPL and Reliance Infocomm. Under Batra's leadership, Airtel consolidated its digital content services, and launched Xstream service and devices.

Indernath, his probable successor has also been associated with Airtel for almost 13 years. He joined the company as VP - Marketing in 2007. Then went on to take several roles in the company as COO and CEO for multiple divisions. In his most recent role he has been leading Retail business for the telecom company. Whether or not Indernath will take over remains ambiguous, however, he seems like a fine choice to succeed Batra. 

With the broadband business in India showing promising growth over the years, it is an opportunity Airtel can't afford to miss. While the Telecom sector otherwise is facing a slowdown, the broadband sector shows some growth potential. As on 31 July 2018, India had the world's second-largest Internet user-base with 460.24 million broadband internet subscribers in the country. Further, the sector has also seen a lot of investments and developments. FDI inflows into the telecom sector during April 2000 – March 2019 totalled to $32.82 Bn, according to the data released by Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

To ensure that Airtel's business is not slowed down by the struggles the sector is going through currently and be able to harness the potential the sector holds, the company needs a dynamic leader who understands both the business and the company's vision.
