When it comes to commanding top jobs, MBA and engineering students often have access to the top jobs. The rise of digitalization and the need to have qualified talent managing business processes in a dynamic business environment has fuelled their demand. Companies across the board today have been innovating their recruitment processes, strengthening their employment brands, and reaching out to wider talent pools, all to get the best of management and engineering talent to walk through their doors.

But where do MBA and engineering graduates want to work?

This question was answered by a recent CRISIL backed Dare2Compete study on Campus Employer Branding. A report that reached out to over 4400 B-School and 8500 engineering students across the country, sought to identify the candidate's dream employers. For many such companies, this was a testament to their employer brand and strong positioning among the stiff competition to attract the right talent.

Google, Mckinsey, Amazon shine

Proving it remains one of the top employers in the country Google featured as the number 1 company for employment for both management and engineering students. While it gained the 1st spot in the category of Dream Companies 2022, McKinsey emerged as the runner-up, followed by HUL in 3rd place in the B-School category. Amazon won the rankings by the neck and grabbed the 4th position, leaving behind Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in the 5th place. Companies such as Bain & Company, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, Flipkart, and ITC Limited are all featured in the top 10 leading companies for management students to work in.

While Google remained the top destination for engineering students, the CEBR 2022 noted that the second position went to, Amazon. Reflecting on the strong employer positioning of tech companies when it comes to attracting tech talent, Microsoft took the third position. The top Indian IT firms, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys were the next best destination for engineering students across the country.

The rising importance of competitions

The CEBR 2022 noted how hiring competitions on campus have begun playing a major in the way students interact and reach out to prospective employers. The majority of students across both engineering and management categories voted in favour of competitions like Case-Study, Quizzes, Simulations, etc. as the most desired engagement activity for connecting with recruiters. This was followed by Placement Talks. Speaking of the rewards from the competitions, students chose Direct Job/Internship Offers (PPOs) as their top priority.

Speaking of the popularity of competitions among students, Flipkart & Amazon took the top two spots in D2C Prestigious B-School Competitions 2022 for WiRED 5.0 and ACE 2021 respectively, giving each other a tough competition. HUL grabbed 3rd place for its flagship Case-study competition, L.I.M.E.

For engineering students, competitions like Google’s Code Jam continues to be the favourite followed closely by Accenture’s Strategy Connect. Other competitions like Infosys HackWithInfy and Flipkart GRiD 3.0 secured the 3rd and 4th ranks, respectively.

This rising popularity of hiring challenges was corroborated by the fact that the students who participated in competitions increased their odds of grabbing higher CTCs. The report noted that more than 87% of the B-Schoolers who received the INR 27+ LPA package participated in more than 3 competitions. A similar result is drawn in the engineering landscape. More than 81% of the engineering candidates who received 15+ LPA packages competed in more than 1 competition. Thus hiring competitions have today begun playing a major role in how companies hire.

Top sectors for B-school graduates

The CEBR 2022 noted that FMCG, Consulting, BFSI, and New-Age Tech-companies/Startups remained the top categories among management students. When compared to the previous year, the report noted a shift in the priorities among students from top business schools. Consulting led the list of the most sought-after sector, followed by FMCG, E-Commerce, and BFSI. While FMCG remained a top destination in the past year, Consulting grew in importance, stated the report.

HUL and ITC Limited were the top two companies within the FMCG category while McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Company emerged as the top 3 desirable consulting companies. Within the BFSI sector, management students preferred Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase & Co. as the top two most desirable companies for the third year in a row.

E-Commerce giants Amazon and Flipkart dominated the priorities of management students when it came to the tech companies/ startup category. Nykaa, the CEBR noted, overtook Google to grab 3rd place.
