Govt reviews plan to raise salary cap to avail ESI facilities

The labour ministry is reconsidering a plan to increase the salary ceiling for workers to be eligible for the Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) facilities after representatives of workers and small enterprises expressed concerns that the move could result in higher deductions in salaries and increase the financial burden on employers, respectively. Former labour minister Sis Ram Ola proposed to increase the salary cap of beneficiaries to Rs.25,000 from Rs.15,000. Ola said the move would provide medical benefit to an additional 4.5 million workers.
