All five unions of Coal India, representing almost its entire work force, have declared a three-day strike from September 23, Economic Times reported. This will be followed by an indefinite strike if the government does not initiate steps for settlement of their demands by September 22.

The unions are protesting the government's decision to divest 5% in Coal India. They are also protesting the government's indifference to address a set of 25 demands. The strike is expected to cause production loss of at least 3 million tonnes and revenue loss of about Rs 400 crore. An indefinite strike may lead to nationwide shortage of coal, leading to decline in power generation and massive power cuts.
