HAL workers’ union to go on indefinite strike
Employees of the state owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) have been demanding a 'fair and reasonable' wage hike since 30th September. But the management have been unable to meet their demands. Resultantly, the workers’ union have decided to go ahead with their plan to hold indefinite protest from 14th October. In fact, the union has has asked all the workmen of all the divisions to fully participate and plan to make this strike a historical success.
While the management at HAL looks forward to avert the strike, HAL Trade Unions' Coordination Committee feels it has refused to consider the fair and reasonable demands of the unions in regard to wage revision.
Reportedly, HAL had offered to enhance allowance under the cafeteria system and revised rate of fitment benefit at 11 percent among others. However, the Union doesn't seem to be convinced.
HAL said, "Despite the management's concerted efforts towards bringing an amicable/early wage settlement, unions unfortunately have adopted a recalcitrant approach and did not accept the offer and decided to resort to indefinite strike; in spite of management's appeal not to resort to an indefinite strike and resolve the issue in a spirit of accommodation."
The management had previously also raised their concern over the strike. They speculate that the proposed indefinite strike can have adverse repercussions on the performance of the organization in general and workmen in particular.
With the company's performance at stake, the management has to plan how they avert the strike that begins today. As the situation gets more intense with strike, management has to revisit their suggested solutions and see how they can better meet the demands regarding wage revision. With the wage revision being pending since January 2017, the Union might need to here more concrete plans for the way forward.
Amidst such tension, how the management of HAL maintains the relations with employees, and how both the parties accommodate and work together to arrive to a consensus are a few things to look forward to.
