Tata- Britain's largest industrial employer

The salt to software conglomerate, Tata Group, which has a penchant for major acquisitions in Britain, is now the largest industrial employer in Britain. The group which in the past one decade has invested $15 billion in Britain to acquire companies like Tetley, Corus, JLR, and Brunner Mond; today employs approximately 45,000 people in UK. As of September 2011, Tata’s workforce in Britain comprised of 19,400 employees in Tata Steel, 19,000 in JLR, 4,900in TCS, 500 in Tata Chemicals, 700 in TGB, 400 in Taj (hotels) and another 600 in various other entities.

As Indian business tycoons want to build global businesses rather than just regional ones, Britain with abundance of expertise, strong brands and relatively open economy makes for an attractive destination. The desire to be big and international (and not merely confined to India) justifies the acquisition spree of the Tata Group. The increasing employee base in Britain and investment in resources over the years has further proved many a skeptics’ wrong who vouched that Tata would strip out technology and ship it home while retrenching people.
