IIT Kharagpur is the first institute in the country to be recognized by the government as an institute of national importance. The Vinod Gupta School of Management, founded by an IIT alum Vinod Gupta and the Government of India, is working towards providing the best-in-class managerial skills to the engineers. The institute focuses on developing future leaders who are able to appreciate the importance of having an understanding in technological advancements and also have managerial & leadership skills at the same time. Only students with a high CAT score and a strong past academic performance record or work experience are further selected for a GD and PI and then finally shortlisted for admissions. The courses offered by the institute are regular MBA, executive MBA, PhD, MDP and some industry oriented short-term courses.

The institute has highly qualified faculty from across the country, who are not just involved in teaching the regular programmes, but also in research and consultancy projects and programs with executives and corporates. Being the first of its kind in the IIT bunch, the institute has been a centre of excellence in management education and research, with consistent emphasis on the right mix of lectures, case-studies, group projects and workshops as a part of the pedagogy. Adding an edge to management education as compared to the other institutes, the students can also opt for certain electives from various departments of IIT, along with their core management subjects.

Along with the internal knowledge expertise and strength, the institute also has international tie-ups with the Peter Kiewit Institute, University of Nebraska and College of Business Administration, Creighton University for exchange of students and faculty. Moreover, with a strong alumni and industry connectedness in place, the institute has established a Research and Case Development Cell. The students display a high level of team work and integrity through various committees that function under the guidance of faculty. Unwinding from the strict academic routine and unfolding their interests and hobbies, the students also involve themselves in social initiatives such as ‘saamanjasya’ and organize some very energetic technical, cultural and sports events. Adding a zing to the classroom sessions and providing increased exposure, they also have some subject specific student clubs for marketing, finance, operations, entrepreneurship etc.
