Internet entity AOL plans to cut several hundred jobs in India but is on a hiring spree in its home country and other overseas market.
AOL has been facing stiff competition from its rivals along with poor business prospects. This step is being seen as an attempt to revive its operations.
AOL CEO Tim Armstrong commented, "As a company, there are about 200 (job cuts) in the US and about 700 in India, although about 300 of those are going to go an outsourcer. So effectively, it's about 400 to 600 (job cuts) between India and the US,"
Incidentally, the company has posted over 200 job openings in March and the openings are mostly in the US, UK and Ireland. The company is hiring people for various sectors which include advertising, consumer applications, corporate services and media/content.
The company’s Indian profile includes e-mail, instant messaging, news, sports, entertainment and a host of other information and content. The current strength of employees of AOL in the country is around 1000 and is expected to reduce it by 50%.
