Firms back government's plan to give better deal to contract workers

Tata and Mahindra group companies, Cummins India and state-owned Bhel could be part of a government-backed industry initiative to absorb contract workers as part of a push for more equitable treatment of the labour force. The Planning Commission is working with companies to frame guidelines that will increase the number of permanent workers and raise the wages of those on contract and bring them closer to those of regular employees, seeking to bridge a gap that has led to labour strife in large manufacturing companies across India.
