While the nation struggles with talent scarcity on one hand and lack of job opportunities on the other, the Maharashtra government has accepted the State Backward Class Commission's report and decided to give quota in jobs and educational institutes to the Maratha community.

The reservation will be granted to the community under a new category called 'Socially and Educationally Backward Class' (SEBC) as per the recommendation of the State Backward Class Commission.

The community had demanded for reservation for a long time. In fact, its agitation for the same in July and August this year had taken a violent turn.

Now, as the commission approves of the demands, the quantum of the reservation will be fixed by the cabinet sub-committee assigned to chalk out technical aspects of the bill (granting quota) which will be tabled in the coming session.

However, the decision might also face resistance from other backward class members if they think that their share in the reservation will be affected by this new development. Further, the precarious job situation might create more problems and increase the pressure on employers. Reservations in jobs and educational institutions have always been a debatable topic, while some speak in favor of it, some point out the negative implications it may have.

The debate still continues with a conclusion or a solution seeming a far-fetched dream, putting all responsibility on the shoulders of business and academic leaders on how they will both respect the challenges of minorities and hire the right talent for the job.
