OpenAI appoints Sarah Friar as CFO in leadership shuffle

OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company, has appointed Sarah Friar as its new Chief Financial Officer and Kevin Weil as Chief Product Officer to support its global expansion and enhance its research capabilities.

Friar, formerly the CEO of Nextdoor, will lead the finance team and ensure continued investment in OpenAI's core research while scaling operations to meet the growing demand for its products and services. Weil, who previously served as President of Product and Business at Planet Labs, will spearhead the product team focused on applying OpenAI's research to benefit consumers, developers, and businesses.

"Sarah and Kevin bring a depth of experience that will enable OpenAI to scale our operations, set a strategy for the next phase of growth, and ensure that our teams have the resources they need to continue to thrive," said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, in a statement.

In May of this year, the AI firm saw the departure of its co-founder and chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever followed by Altman's announcement of Jakub Pachocki's appointment as the new Chief Scientist of OpenAI.

In addition to her role at Nextdoor, Friar has held leadership positions at Square, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, and Salesforce. She serves on the boards of Walmart and Consensys and is a Fellow of the Aspen Institute and Co-Chair of the Stanford Digital Economy Lab.

Weil's background includes co-founding the Libra cryptocurrency, leading product teams at Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. He is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the boards of The Nature Conservancy and the Black Product Managers Network.

"My goal is to help OpenAI continue excelling at what it does best—producing top-tier research and collaborating to maximize the benefits of AI tools for everyone," said Friar. Weil added, "The product team at OpenAI has set the pace for both breakthrough innovation, and thoughtful deployment of AI products."

The appointments come as OpenAI aims to expand its global reach, serving hundreds of millions of consumers, millions of developers, and the world's largest companies with its cutting-edge artificial intelligence research and products.
