Manpower shortage in the Income Tax department

A Hindu Business Line news report states that direct tax collections in the country may fall short by Rs. 15,000 crores owing a manpower shortage. A. Sitarama Rao, President of the Income-Tax Gazetted Officers Association suggests that the 1350 additional posts of Gazetted Group A officers should be closed by promoting Group B income tax officers.

Sitarama Rao, President of the Income-Tax Gazetted Officers Association suggests that the 1350 additional posts of Gazetted Group A officers should be closed by promoting Group B income tax officers.

These two rank alone collects 80-85 per cent of direct taxes in India. The Income Tax Department plans to appoint 270 Group A officers a year for five years. Half of these will be through direct recruitment and half through promotion.
